5 Things Your Daily Routine Must Have To Get More Things Done

How do you do it? How do you keep up on all.the.things. you have to do as a mom? The question comes up a lot with me. The answer is really simple. It all has to do with my daily routine. And whether you realize it or not—you have a daily routine too.

But…you might not have…the best daily routine.

And that’s totally reasonable. I didn’t get things right until just a few years ago. So I’m going to share with you today—the daily routine that will make your life easier. Or to get started right away, just grab the Make Life Easier Checklist to help you to get more things done.

What is the best daily routine?

There are some essential Must Haves for a daily routine that will make you more efficient—so that—you can get more things done both today and in the long run.

With that being said, there are 5 Things that I do every single day that help me to get more done. If I don’t do these 5 things—I notice the difference in how I feel emotionally, physically, and mentally.

I need every single one of these things to happen, for me to feel like I’ve won the day.

And by far, this is the system for creating the best daily routine because it allows for flexibility.

And we all need that. Because let’s face it—life is full of changes. This routine allows for flexibility, has the right amount of structure, and I promise you won’t get too overwhelmed

How do you get all the things done as a mom? It can feel like there's so much to do, it's easy to feel overwhelmed. Don't miss these 5 must haves for your daily routine schedule—to make life easier. And get more things done!

How do you build a routine?

To build an efficient routine, use these 5 things as categories or time blocks to set structure or a basic reoccurring schedule into your day.

Next, take each category and break that down into more details—the things that will specifically work for you.

The categories function as reoccurring items in your day and they don’t change. I will warn you though, don’t try to change or create all of these 5 things at once. Work on one thing at a time, then once you establish it, build on that category with the next one.

1. Prayer and devotions.

This first one is of extreme importance to your daily routine. By taking time every day to focus on a relationship with God that is growing, you actually get more things done.

I know it kinda sounds crazy, but it’s true.

I used to work for a non profit organization that instilled this practice in me. Every work day we would gather together in the morning as a staff for a short devotion and prayer time together.

It wasn’t required but highly encouraged.

What was most interesting is that it became quickly evident to me that those individuals who came to prayer time actually felt like they accomplished more in their day—than those who did not.

It wasn’t just a one time occurrence.

It happened all the time.

I don’t know how to explain it, other than when you draw near to the Lord, He draws near to you. As you do this you also get some things too—like peace and confidence.

2. A Morning Routine

Everybody has a morning routine. Even as you’re reading this you might be thinking, “I don’t really have a morning routine.” But the reality is—you do. Every day you do the same things—but you might not even recognize it because it’s just automatic for you.

I started to recognize this more when I started implementing a more “intentional” morning routine of what I wanted to have as routine.

The one thing that was most clear to me was the way I would take a shower. I discovered that I would always do things in a certain order, every single time.

I bet you have the same things you do too.

It’s so natural that you don’t really think about it. And this, this is where the key is to having a morning routine.

Once you establish a morning routine then you start to do it without even thinking about it. So imagine, what would your morning look like if you intentionally took time to “create” a morning routine that was exactly what you wanted it to be? 

3. A Nighttime Routine

Just like a morning routine, an evening routine helps you to wind down for the day. It sets you up for a good night’s sleep and a more successful morning. A sample nighttime routine might look like this:

  • 8:00 drink last 6 oz of water
  • 8:30 Tuck kids in bed
  • 9:00 Connect with Spouse time
  • 10:00 Bathroom routine (dental routine, facial routine, etc.)
  • 10:10 PJ’s
  • 10:15 Reflect/Pray
  • 10:30 Bedtime

4. A Healthy Choices Plan

This might be something completely new for a lot of you. So because of that, I’m going to explain it a little more.

Before you even start your day, you need to decide what your goal for the day is regarding your health. This doesn’t need to be too difficult. When choices come your way, because you’ve already made a plan ahead of time then you’re more likely to choose the healthy choice as opposed to caving into something that you don’t really want to do, eat, or say.

So what could this look like?

It could be as simple as deciding to workout for 30 minutes, taking vitamins, or drinking 6 glasses of water. Or it could be a little more strategic like covering goals you have in the 7 spheres of healthy living.

5. Scheduled Break Times

This is something that often as moms we forget to do. Before long we end up feeling exhausted and overwhelmed simply because we are poured out.

We’ve got nothing left.

This is why it is important to schedule breaks into our day. All it takes is a couple 15 minute breaks to give us a breather.

Something you might not have thought about before today is that getting more done isn’t always about doing things in less time. Less time is a short–sighted, short–lived goal that you can’t sustain in the long run. And this is one myth that many moms believe—especially related to clearing the clutter in your homes.

For instance, you can work harder work smarter and see quick results. But in the process there are some casualties along the way. Often our health is one of those things.

Getting more done can actually be defined more accurately as getting higher quality results. And that is directly related to how the daily routine positively impacts your overall health.

And…the reality is, that if you do end up having more time, you just fill it with doing more things. Right?

So taking a look at what I’ve shared today, the 5 Must Haves I have in my routine, did you notice something? I didn’t tell you what things to do in your daily routine.

Why?

Because for your daily routine to be efficient—you have to create your routine.  I just provided the framework for you to create your own daily routine.
